Timing can make or break a home project. Book the wrong job in the wrong season and you may face delays, damp materials or crews working against the weather. Plan around the calendar and the same project runs more smoothly, and sometimes for less.

Here is a season by season guide to help you plan.

Spring: plan, design and prepare

Spring is ideal for planning visits, design work and getting quotes before the busy summer rush. It is also a good time for:

  • Roof inspections after winter storms, so repairs can be booked early.
  • Garden design and planting plans while the soil is warming up.
  • Window replacements on mild, dry days before the summer heat.

Summer: outdoor and exterior work

Long, dry days suit jobs that need open roofs or walls. Roofing, siding, decks, patios and exterior painting all go best in settled weather. Summer is also a strong season for solar installations, as crews can work long hours on the roof.

Book summer exterior work early. The best crews fill their calendars by late spring.

Autumn: seal up and get ready

As temperatures drop, focus on keeping heat in. Autumn is a great time for insulation upgrades, sealing drafts, servicing heating and checking smoke alarms and fire safety equipment before the darker months. It is also the last good window for exterior jobs before frost.

Winter: inside projects

Winter is the season for interior work. Bathrooms, flooring, kitchens and decor projects are all unaffected by the weather, and trades often have more availability. With the house closed up, it is also a good time to plan next year's outdoor work so it is ready to start as soon as spring arrives.

Fit the plan to your life too

The weather is only half the story. Think about holidays, school terms and family events. A bathroom remodel just before guests arrive adds stress nobody needs. Tell us what your year looks like and we will build a schedule around it.
